Reflections in an Aquarium

Reflections in an Aquarium

This painting is being exhibited at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition, 13 June – 20 August 2017

Medium: Acrylic

Dimensions: (H) 82cm (W) 107cm (D) 3cm

About the painting:

I was drawn to painting an aquarium because of the challenge of capturing the effects of light and reflection in the streams of bubbles and in the rich deep shadows broken by beams of light. In particular, I wanted to portray the glittering light of the water reflected in the scales of the fish. As the aquarium is an artificial portrayal of nature, I have not attempted to make the fish too realistic but preferred to give them a somewhat menacing and malevolent feel as they patrol the confines of their watery world.
